Year 6 Residential Trip (24th - 27th March)

Year 6 head off for their residential trip on the 24th March to Runway's End Outdoor Centre. Please check in here for updates and photos.

Day One

We arrived safely at Runway's End and after settling into our pods, enjoyed lunch in the marquee next door. Following this, we had the first of our two afternoon activities which was orienteering. We split up into groups and headed around the whole of the camp site searching for coloured stars. It was a bit trickier than we first imagined.

After we had completed this activity, we took on some team challenges. We started off with a crate challenge, needing to get from one side to the other without touching the floor and bringing all our crates with us. Then we had to communicate a drawn picture from one side of our group to another, one person at a time and then draw it at the end - there were some interesting final pictures.

With all these finished we headed off to tea - pizza, pasta and mac & cheese, followed by chocolate cake. After some evening playtime, we headed off to our pods and settled in

Day Two

A full and fun packed day has been enjoyed by all here at Runway's End. After a very tasty cooked breakfast, we all headed off into the camp where groups were challenged to design a way to safely land an egg from a very high height. We explored some ideas that we thought would make our designs successful and then headed off to by materials from 'the shop'. With only 20 tokens to spend, we had to decide carefully what we wanted to use. Finally we tested them using our egg (which was actually a water balloon). Over half were successful and all the designs were well thought out.

We then headed off site to the woods next door to learn more about the trees and woodland. We made some colour and texture boards, using the natural materials from the woodland and trees. These looked fantastic when they were all laid down together. We then headed off to 'interview' some trees and to be a little closer to nature - thinking about what the trees around us might have seen, how old they were and we even named some of them. Finally, we explored the carbon load a tree takes on by completing a tree passport. This really showed how important trees are to us and our planet.

After lunch, we all headed off to the climbing areas to take on our rope challenges. All the children attempted to scale the climbing tower on two sides to challenge themselves and see how high they could go. It took a lot of determination and courage but lots surprised themselves with how well they did. We were also challenged to work on teams to complete a low ropes course without touching the floor - this required cooperation, communication and some problem solving. All the groups did really well and had a lot of fun too.

This evening, after a burger and chips dinner, we enjoyed a movie evening before settling into our pods and resting our tired heads. We are looking forward to archery, caving, canoeing and raft building tomorrow.

Day Three

Our last full day at Runway's End has been a fabulous one, with all the children enjoying a range of activities throughout the day. After another hearty breakfast, the class split up into three groups and spent the day doing caving, archery, canoeing and raft building. All the children got fully stuck in and with the best weather of the week, made the most of the outdoor fun.

The canoeing saw the children getting on the water and heading down the Basingstoke Canal learning how to steer and control their canoe. They were also challenged to a 'treasure hunt' where they had to collect numerous floating items from the canal by maneuvring their boats around.

Raft building also took place by the water, with the groups being given equipment and instructions to build a raft which they would be using on the water. This really challenged the children to work in teams to complete their rafts. Once completed, they took them to the canal to test them out! It took coordination, balance and teamwork - with all rafts successfully floating (with children) on the canal.

Archery was enjoyed by all and there were some very impressive archers amongst the children. They learnt how to draw the bow accurately and had plenty of opportunity to fire arrows at the targets - they even played some games once they had mastered the skill of firing.

Finally the caving, which was a new experience for us all. We had to get into caving suits (which made us all look like Mario) and then headed into the caving tunnels - this was a big challenge for many of us but everyone rose to it and entered in. Some of the tunnels were really narrow and had us crawling on our hands, knees and tummies. It also gave us the opportunity to learn how caves are formed.

Our final evening ended around the camp fire with songs being sung and looking back at a wonderful day.
