Autumn 1 learning

Maths

In Maths, we are looking at numbers to 100. We will be making numbers using lots of different resources using the CPA approach - making numbers using resources, drawing it in books and then writing the number. We will be partitioning numbers into tens and ones using dienes (see resource below). We will also be recapping number bonds to 10 from Year 1 and then moving onto finding all the number bonds up to 20. We will then be adding and subtracting numbers up to 100 using dienes to support this.

English

We will be linking our writing this half term to our Project ‘What does a pirate need to reach the treasure?’ The children will be writing a description of a pirate, an information leaflet about pirates. We will then be looking at the traditional fairy tale ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and write a setting description of the gingerbread cottage and then retelling the story. Throughout our writing, there will be a big focus on making sure that the children can write sentences correctly using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and that they are able to spell key words from Year 1 as well as using their Phonics to sound out words.

Geography

Our Geography this half term is focusing on naming and locating the world’s seven continents and five oceans. We will be learning songs to help us remember the names of the continents and oceans. We will also be looking at maps and compasses and use our knowledge to create our own maps of the school and a map for a pirate to get to its treasure.

Science

Our Science this half term is looking at animal and human life cycles. We will start off by matching adult animals with their young and then move onto matching different human milestones such as crawling, starting school, driving a car and getting a job to the part of a human’s life that it happens. We will then look at the life cycle of different animals and the life cycle of humans.

Design Technology

In DT this half term we will be looking at different treasure chests and saying what we like and dislike about them. The children will then design and make their own treasure chest!  Making the treasure chests will include cutting out, making them, painting and decorating them. They will be bringing them home at the end of the half term.
