Year 5 - Capri

Welcome back, Year 5! We hope that you have had an enjoyable Christmas and are ready to dive into the Industrial Revolution!

Our topic this half term is 'The Industrial Revolution' and we will be focusing on the key question - 'what

We will be learning all about how the inventions of the Industrial Revolution have had an impact on our life today. We're lucky enough to have our topic enhanced by a trip to Whitchurch Silk Mill on 6th February where we will be taking part in workshops and listening to the expert historians who work there.

English this half term is inspired by Berlie Doherty's "Street Child" which follows the story of a young boy called Jim Jarvis and his difficult journey through poverty and mistreatment in the workhouse, to life on the streets until he is rescued by a man named Barnie. We will write newspaper reports on Jim's escape from the workhouse and use 'Oliver Twist' to enhance our writing. We will also write our own fantasy stories based on 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' by C.S. Lewis, a famous writer towards the end of the Industrial Revolution.

In Maths, we'll be continuing to practice formal methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and finding different ways to ensure a secure understanding. This will help us when we attempt more complex problems.

Please keep reading daily and practising the spellings that come home - we have a spelling test every Monday and the words can be found on the Home Learning Sheet.

Our P.E days have changed to Wednesday and Friday. Please remember to bring kit to school on those days, ideally they should be kept in school until they need washing.

Club day is Thursday. Remember, clubs do not run on the first and last week of term.

Any questions or concerns, please come and see us!
